The Department also offers multidisciplinary approach for the treatment of Aneurysms, Arterio-Venous Malformations & Angiomas.
Micro Neurosurgery :- This is one of the most important advances which has helped to make most neurosurgeries safe. The surgeon uses an operating microscope to visualize the deep structures of the brain and special instruments to operate in the depth. The superior illumination and magnification allows for better differentiation of normal and abnormal structures-resulting in improved safety.
Neuroendoscopy :- Several neurosurgical operations can be performed with the help of endoscopes by making tiny holes in the skull (in contrast to opening large bone flap for routine procedures). This minimally invasive technique reduces the operating time, post operative pain and discomfort and improves safety.
Stereotaxy :- Another minimally invasive technique to reach any defined point in the brain through a small hole in the skull under local anaesthesia for the purposes of diagnosis (biopsy) or stimulation (eg. in movement disorders like Parkinsonism). With the help of good imaging and specialized instruments VIMHANS is able to offer this treatment for a variety of indications.
Functional Neurosurgery :- Is able to help patients with PARKINSON’S and related movement disorders as well as epilepsy .
Gamma Knife Radio Surgery :- Vimhans is one of only four centres in India, to install this equipment , under the auspices of the RANCAN GAMMA KNIFE CENTRE . This is a state of art revolutionary device consisting of an array of cobalt 60 sources which is an isotope and emits Gamma Rays. It allows non – invasive (without opening the skull) destruction of any tumor or vascular malformation with extreme precision and without injury to adjacent normal brain. It is helpful in treatment of tumors in inaccessible surgical locations, vascular malformations in difficult locations and a variety of other indications. The results are excellent with practically no complications. The patient can join work the day after Gamma Knife therapy is done.
