INTRODUCTION

VIMHANS was established in the year 1985 to provide largely mental health care and in 1995 expanded to include Neurosciences . VIMHANS has been a health care provider with distinction for the past two decades .To continue its good work in mental health and extend its services to larger population and community it is spearheading education and training in mental health for students and professionals in psychology , nursing ,social work, occupational therapy and related disciplines.Training & Education plays an important part in developing fine professionals in health services. VIMHANS has always identified the need of incorporating training of various health professionals in its work culture. In spite of being a 'Non-Teaching' hospital, VIMHANS is serving as a platform for many professionals to receive training in many clinical subjects.

All departments of our hospital encourage free exchange of views between Resident Medical Officers and Consultants. A continuous program of clinical case presentations, seminars, CMEs etc. ensures that resident officers working in our hospital receive good clinical training.

Students from various academic institutions of the country come to VIMHANS to acquire skills in clinical psychology during their post graduate field training. During this period students not only get a chance to observe clinical care closely, but also get a chance to work with clients on one-to-one basis.

Hospital also conducts one and half year program to provide Home Care Training to students from under-privileged sections of society. These Home Care workers are meant to help in caring for the elderly who have become dependent because of mental or physical disability. This training program applies the  'earn while you work' philosophy with a guranteed stipend for students.

In addition VIMHANS regularly conducts programs for educating members of community and health providers outside hospital setting. Various conferences, workshops, camps etc. are organized at regular interval in various places in North India. In last few years, hospital has developed into a meeting place for professionals to come together and exchange knowledge and ideas.

The school of mental health (SOMH) is an academic initiative of VIMHANS towards capacity development and to train professionals in mental health and related disciplines. SOMH has come in to existence on 4th December 2004. The academic initiative at VIMHANS is nurtured by a committed and well qualified team of colleagues to shape a new generation of mental health professionals to stand on their own feet
