Department of Psychiatry

What is the role of the Psychiatrist?

There are many uninformed people today who harbor the misconception that a psychiatrist is one who treats only persons who are "CRAZY." For their benefit, let us say that a psychiatrist in private practice is a physician who specializes in the treatment of various kinds of nervous and mental disorders. He/she is specialist who is qualified to analyze and understand the emotional frustrations of everyday life in relation to people 's health. He/she is capable of guiding and assisting people with their individual problems. The psychiatrist investigates the emotional implications of symptoms for patients of other physicians, patients who come to be treated for physical ailments, but whose difficulties prove to be primarily emotional and mental. It might be said that a psychiatrist is one who studies his patients's joys and sorrows, his hopes and fears, and who is convinced that it is just as important to know what sort of patient has a disease as it is to know what sort of disease a patient has.
